Heavy Load

My brother’s been a trucker
All his thankless life
Just hauling things he’d rather leave behind

And I think he just let go
To cut the crushing weight
But he came to find the weight was all inside

And he doesn’t drive anymore
But I know he feels the weight
Of his dangerous heavy load

And he never thought of others
As he crashed through this world
We were all just branches growing in the way

And the things I heard and saw
Calcified inside me
Those shapeless pits blackened everything

And I grew to be a man
All twisted up and strange
In the shadow of his heavy load

Am F C Am F G

And I know the day is coming
When I’ll stand over him
And I’ll cry for all the things he stole from me

And I’ll think about his cars
All torn by rusty tools
And the nuts and bolts he never put back in

And I’ll pick up my share
Of what he left behind
And I’ll add it to my own heavy load
