Nothing But the Way It’s Always Been

I think I lost an hour
But it felt a whole lot longer
Because I didn’t really sit there
As much as float away

And I watched the grocery carts
One was rolling off into nowhere
Like it couldn’t stand to be there
But it didn’t get that far

And it’s crushing
But it’s nothing
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way it’s always been

Headlights caught some plastic
That was ghosting in the wind
And for a while I pretended
That I had somewhere to go

Then I thought of all the breakdowns
And the running that I’ve done
Then a streetlight flickered on
And you flooded me again

And it’s crushing
But it’s nothing
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way it’s always been

All my life
I’ve been miles away
Trying hard
Just to make it through the day
And to brave all the pain
But the more I try the more things stay the same

My eyes showed me a beauty
But I felt almost nothing
Just a twinge of that something
That used to cause me pain

But I know the day is coming
When I’ll up and try again
And I’ll wallow in the things
That make me float away

And it’s crushing
But it’s nothing
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way
Nothing but the way it’s always been
