Everything But on Fire
I was a heartless sky-bent hardwood
And you were newborn flame
That was lit by clapping clouds
And for a moment the forest looked on as we burned
And the game trails rivered with creatures
But we were everything
Everything
We were everything
But on fire
The darkness waited a thousand feet back
While an east wind dirty whispered
And rushed our natural arc
And we fell for miles as cinder and smoke
And returned the shapes that we took
But we were everything
Everything
We were everything
But on fire
And it could’ve been the wind
Or a wet spring snow
Or a brother falling on me that cut me down
But it was you
It was you, sweet flame
It was you and the weakness of my nature
After a million ephemeral shapes
And all their timeless ends
I resumed a hardwood’s grace
And I’ve looked to the sky for 500 years
Because I always feel you’re near
Because we were everything
Everything
We were everything
But on fire
We were everything but on fire
